21st August 2007, Dunston
FFC 1 Consett AFC 0, League.
Attendance 207
Fed gained all 3
points in a tough and entertaining game at Fed Park tonight. The game
started like a game of chess with possession being the key and chances
rare. After 5 minutes Moffat went on a solo run but was pushed wide
and hit straight at Clark in the Fed goal. Fed's first chance came
after 10 minutes when Cattenach played in a cross from the right and
Ben Johnson's flying volley would have been goal of the season had it
not missed by 10 yards. 2 minutes later Fed went close from a corner
which fell to Dunn whose effort was blocked to Chris Laws but his
attempt was also blocked this time for a corner. Fed took the lead
after 17 minutes when Johnson found space on the left and crossed low
for Pickering to hit first time, low and giving Turns no chance. Consett hit straight back and Steve Johnson found himself in space but
Clark dived at his feet and denied him any effort at goal. Consett
gained the upper hand possession wise but must have been disappointed
that they were not turning this possession into clear chances. After
a 36th minute corner Mattie Moffat headed over. 5 minutes later with
the visitors on top Ormston tried a long range effort which was
straight into the arms of Clark. A tough half with Fed being glad of
the one goal lead.
The second half
continued as the first left off, the visitors were playing nice
passing football but failing to penetrate in the final third. Chris
Laws went on a good solo run for the Fed but Dave Johnson got in a
saving tackle. Fed had a little bit of pressure and from a second
successive corner Dunn headed down from the edge of the area for Chris
Laws to shoot wide on the turn. Consett hit straight back and Steve
Johnson had a good chance but O'Bern got in a last gasp tackle. In
the 52nd minute Cattenach went on a solo run then laid inside for
Pattinson who tried his luck from 35 yards and was unlucky to see his
effort hit off the bar with Consett keeper Turns well beaten. Fed
could have doubled their lead after 72 when Pattinson cut through the
centre and passed left to sub Ludlow who hit just over. Consett
replied immediately and Steve Johnson latched onto a long ball and hit
just wide from a difficult angle. Consett piled on the pressure in
the last 10 and S Johnson ran onto a through ball, rounded Clark and
hit goalward but Dunn cleared off the line. Fed almost hit on the
break and sub Swanston seemed to be through on goal but Gaffney made a
great tackle. Fed finished on the back foot and Moffat headed just
over the bar. Then Dunn was forced to clear a long throw from a
dangerous looking situation and the next throw was headed straight at
Clark. Fingernails were a rare commodity as the final whistle went.
Fed did well to win this game - Consett will rightly feel they
deserved more from the game but after 21 goals in 3 matches were due a
nil. Seriously though most Consett fans I spoke to thought they did
not turn possession into chances.
